Megan Gibson went 3-for-3 with a single, two home runs, three runs scored and three RBI to pace the fourth-ranked Texas A&M softball team to a 9-0 run-ruling of the Sam Houston State Bearkats in front of a school record 709 fans at the Bearkat Softball Complex.
?I?â„¢m really pleased with the way our kids played,? commented A&M head coach Jo Evans. ?I said before the game that I wanted to see us come out and dominate. It?â„¢s nothing against Sam Houston I just felt like we had some great games this weekend in Tucson and we are confident in our ability and I just wanted us to come out and not overlook this team. I wanted us to have that same level of intensity against Sam Houston that we had against Arizona.?
The win brings A&M?â„¢s season record to 14-2 while the loss drops the Bearkats to 5-6.
Designated player, Holly Ridley got the scoring started in the second inning when she belted a two-run homer over the right-center field fence. Gibson scored on the play after reaching base on single.
An inning later, Sharonda McDonald reached on a bunt, stole second and scored after Macie Morrow, who was 2-for-3 in the game, hit a single into left field. Morrow would score after Gibson turned on a pitch sending it deep down the left field line for her first home run of the game, fifth of the season.
Morrow would factor into the scoring again in the fourth as she hit a double that would bring home pinch runner Kristine Test and Joy Davis, giving the Aggies a 7-0 lead.
Gibson would help her cause in the circle and bring the run-rule into effect with her second home run of the game, a solo shot, this time down the right field line.
In addition to her stellar performance at the plate, Gibson earned her seventh win of the season, throwing four complete innings. She gave up just two hits and one free pass. Lisa Gorzycki closed out the final inning of the game for A&M allowing one hit and struck out one Bearkat batter.
A&M finished the game with nine runs on nine hits, committing no errors in the field.
The Aggies return to action Friday as they open the Texas A&M Invitational at the Aggie Softball Complex at 2:30 p.m. against Illinois.
