Top-seeded Texas A&M (23-5, 13-3) will face either No. 8-seeded Colorado (12-16, 6-10) or No. 9-seeded Texas Tech (15-14, 6-10) in the quarterfinals of the upcoming Phillips 66 Big 12 Women?â„¢s Basketball Championship on March 6-8 & 10 at the Cox Convention Center in Oklahoma City.
A&M and No. 2-seeded Oklahoma (23-4, 13-3) captured the Big 12 regular season title. The No. 14-ranked Aggies claimed their first-ever conference crown, while the No. 11-ranked Sooners picked up their fourth title in the Big 12 era (2000, 2001, 2002 and 2006).
The Aggies won the tiebreaker over OU for the top seed in the tournament, after sweeping the Sooners for the first time in school history in the home-and-home series. A&M picked up their first win in Norman since 1990 with a 54-52 upset on Jan. 27 and later won 78-68 on Feb. 10 in College Station. Other teams receiving first-round byes included No. 3-seeded Baylor (24-6, 11-5) and No. 4-seeded Nebraska (22-8, 10-6).
The 2006-07 season marked the third time in conference history that more than one champion was crowned. Iowa State, Oklahoma and Texas Tech took home trophies in 2000, while Kansas State and Texas claimed a share of the title in 2004.
A&M and OU both finished 13-3 in conference play this season. The Aggies went 9-1 in their last 10 games and capped off the season with their first undefeated season at home with a 16-0 mark at Reed Arena. They are 5-1 against the top 25 this season and have been ranked in both national polls a school-record 17-straight weeks.
The Aggies earned the top seed for the first time in program history with a 67-60 victory over Texas (17-13, 6-10) on Wednesday night. They will take on the Buffaloes or Lady Raiders in the first of four quarterfinal games on Wednesday, March 7 at noon. All quarterfinal, semifinal and championship games will be nationally televised on Fox Sports Net.
For the first time in league history, Oklahoma City will serve as the host city for the conference basketball championships. Limited general admission tickets remain for the women?â„¢s championship through Ticketmaster.
