Burgoon, U.S. Trail Japan at Fuji Xerox Collegiate Golf Championship

Team Japan took an 8-4 lead over the United States after the first round of the 32nd Annual Fuji Xerox USA vs. Japan Collegiate Golf Championship on Wednesday at Tijeras Creek Golf Club.

The Japanese women took both matches with Eriko Koyama and Mami Takeda defeating Selanee Henderson and Jennie Lee of the U.S. by nine strokes.

Japan's Hiroko Ayada and Erko Kobashi beat America's Jacqui Concolino and Alison Walshe by five shots.

Japan maintained its lead with Kevin Chappell and Texas A&M's Bronson Burgoon falling short of Japan's Yuta Taniyama and Yuki Usami by two strokes. Yuta Ikeda, who posted an under-par round of 67, along with Daisuke Yasumoto, won their match over Chris McCartin and Daniel Mitchell of Team USA.

The U.S. finished the day by winning its last two matches. Jarin Todd of the U.S. posted the lowest round of the day with a 7-under 65, and with Stephen Goodridge defeated the Japanese team of Ryutaro Nagano and Kentaro Shibata. American's Rob Grube and Gary Woodland completed the day's matches with a one-stroke victory over Yohei Nakamichi and Kenichi Sawada.

The men will lead off Thursday's second day of competition with Burgoon taking on Sawada.
