Former Texas A&M soccer greats, Kati Jo Spisak and Melanie Wilson will start in goal in the semi-final matches of the 2007 W-League Championship on Friday at PAETEC Park in Rochester, N.Y.
Spisak and the Washington Freedom earned a trip to the semi-finals by knocking off the regular season champion Ottawa Fury, 1-0, to capture the Eastern Conference title. Wilson and the Atlanta Silverbacks secured their spot in the semis by claiming the Central Conference championship with a 5-2 routing of the Minnesota Lightening.
Spisak, who lifted A&M to five Big 12 titles while in goal, leads the league in games played (14), wins (12) and minutes in goal (1,233). The Missouri-native is tied with Wilson, who earned two Big 12 trophies of her own, for the league lead in shutouts (7). Wilson?â„¢s 0.25 goals against average is the best in the league. In eight games played, Wilson has only allowed two goals.
The first semi-final match is at 4:30 p.m. (CST) on Friday and will pit the Silverbacks against the winner of the Western Conference, Seattle Sounders. The nightcap will begin at 7 p.m. (CST) and has the No. 1-seed Freedom taking on the Rochester Rhinos, who received an automatic bid for hosting the tournament. The winners of the two semi-finals will meet Sunday for the W-League Championship at 4:30 p.m. (CST). The game can be viewed live on Fox Soccer Channel.
