Texas A&M's Danielle McVeigh carded a final-round 76 on Friday to capture the individual gold medal at the?World University Games.

McVeigh, who will be a sophomore at A&M this fall, finished four strokes ahead of runner-up Diana Cantu on Mexico with a four-over-par total of 72-75-69-76=292. McVeigh led Ireland to a silver medal in the team competition, just one shot behind Mexico.

?In such searing temperatures, we were delighted to be in the shake up right to the very end,? McVeigh said. ?I?â„¢m very proud to win the individual gold medal and thank the Irish Sports Council and all who helped us participate at this elite level.?

As a freshman last season, McVeigh played in 10 of 11 tournaments and posted a 75.17 stroke average, an A&M freshman record and he third best overall in school history. She won the Donnie Thompson Invitational in Hawaii and placed fourth at the Big 12 Championship.

McVeigh was named Big 12 Co-Newcomer of the Year and was selected to the All-Big 12 team.
