Texas A&M?â„¢s Conor Pollock (San Antonio, Texas) and Chris Chirico (Philadelphia, Pa.) advanced to the quarterfinals of doubles at the HEB Baylor Invitational held Friday at the Baylor Tennis Center.
Playing in the doubles main draw, Pollock and Chirico topped Texas A&M-Corpus Christi?â„¢s James Langford and Mike Pavlov, 8-6, in the round of 32. The Aggie duo reached tomorrow?â„¢s quarterfinals by default as Texas Tech?â„¢s Michael Breler and Sinisa Markovic handed the pair a walkover. Pollock, seeded fifth in the 64-player singles main draw, lost a close two-set match in the round of 32 to Baylor?â„¢s David Galic, 7-6, 7-5. He advanced to second-round action with a 6-7, 6-2, 6-4 win over Texas?â„¢ Josh Zavala in the opening round. Chirico, a sophomore transfer from Saint Joseph?â„¢s, moved on in consolation singles play with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Boise State?â„¢s Poitr Dilaj.
Meanwhile, sophomore Brad Williams (Cape Town, South Africa) defeated 12th-seeded Ralph Knupfer of Rice, 6-4, 7-6 (4), in consolation play. He dropped a tough three-setter to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi?â„¢s Dmitry Novikov, 6-4, 5-7, 6-3, in the opening round of 64. Freshman Kayvon Karimi (Dallas, Texas), in his collegiate debut, reached the round of 16 in the B singles draw after picking up a pair of victories versus Cal Baptist?â„¢s Andrew Meister and Lamar?â„¢s Andres Medina in the opening rounds.
