Texas A&M?â„¢s Conor Pollock and Chris Chirico fell in the round of 16 in the qualifying doubles draw of the Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Tennis Championship held Wednesday at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
Pollock (San Antonio, Texas) and Chirico (Philadelphia, Pa.) lost a close three-point tiebreaker to the No. 29 nationally-ranked doubles team of Nick Cavaday and Jay Weinacker of North Carolina State, 9-8 (7). The Aggie duo reached the next round with a 9-7 victory over Kentucky?â„¢s No. 1 doubles combination of Marcus Sundh and Will Ward in the round of 32.
?Conor and Chris did pretty well for just their second tournament of the fall season,? Texas A&M head coach Steve Denton said. ?We competed hard today and made a statement that we are going to be pretty solid in doubles this year.?
Up next, Pollock and senior All-American Jerry Makowski (Bradenton, Fla.) will compete in Thursday?â„¢s singles main draw at the ITA All-American. Makowski will open play in the round of 64 against Hawaii?â„¢s Andreas Weber at 10:30 a.m., while Pollock will face South Alabama?â„¢s Marek Sramek at 11 a.m. Two of the top singles players in the country, Makowski and Pollock are currently ranked No. 34 and No. 37 respectively in the preseason ITA/FILA Collegiate Tennis Rankings.
