No. 13-seeded Texas A&M upset No. 4 Purdue, 3-2, on Sunday in the first round of the Hooters Collegiate Match Play Championship at the Ginn Reunion Resort.
A&M trailed No. 5 Tennessee in the second-round match when play was halted because of darkness. The round will be completed on Monday morning followed immediately by third-round play.
In the win against Purdue, the Aggies got victories from Lauren Johnson (1 up vs. Maria Hernandez), Sarah Zwartynski (2 up vs. Junthima Gulyanamitta) and Ashley Freeman (3 and 2 vs. Stephanie Oukeo). A&M's Sara Hemingway lost to Maude-Aimee Leblanc (7 and 6) and Danielle McVeigh fell to Christel Boeljon (5 and 4).
Against Tennessee, Zwartynski is 2 up vs. Rebecca Watson through 15 holes and Ashley Freeman is 1 up vs. Rachel Ingram through 15. Hemingway trails Nicole Smith (1 up through 15), the Vols' Diana Cantu leads Johnson (3 up through 15) and A&M's Miranda Orr trails Ginny Brown (1 up through 14).
"We fought hard all day and made some fantastic putts and rallied at the end to beat Purdue." McCombs said. "The second round to this point has been really exciting. We are hanging tough with Tennessee and our players realize that anything can happen in match play. We're anxious to get back on the course on Monday."
