No. 10-seeded Alabama held off 13th-seeded Texas A&M, 3-2, on Tuesday in the consolation round of the Hooters Collegiate Match Play Championship at Ginn Reunion Resort.
Top-seeded Duke downed No. 6 Georgia, 3-1-1, to claim its fourth straight title in the event. The Aggies finished sixth in the 14-team tournament with a 2-2 record that included wins against No. 4 Purdue and No. 9 Oklahoma State.
Against the Crimson Tide, A&M got victories from senior Miranda Orr ( 1 up vs. Helena Blomberg) and freshman Sarah Zwartynski (1 up vs. Laura Goodwin). Zwartynski completed the tournament with a perfect 4-0 record.
Alabama posted wins by Camilla Lennarth ( 2 and 1 vs. freshman Sara Hemingway), Kathleen Ekey (3 and 2 vs. junior Lauren Johnson) and Sarah Sturm (4 and 3 vs. sophomore Ashley Freeman).
The event closed A&M's fall schedule. The Aggies open their spring season at the Northrup Gramman Challenge Feb. 11-13 in Palos Verdes, Calif.
