Texas A&M diver Eric Sehn became the winningest athlete in any sport in school history by rolling to his ninth career individual conference crown at the 2007 Big 12 Swimming and Diving Championships on Saturday.
Sehn, a junior from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, crushed the field with a Big 12 record point total of 450.65 points for a 120-point victory over the No. 2 finisher. For the second straight night, Sehn had the competition sewed up prior to his final dive.
For Sehn, it was his third straight ?triple crown? sweep of the one- and three-meter springboards and the platform at the conference championships.
"Coach (Kevin) Wright told me to go for it tonight, but to try to be a little more precise," Sehn said. "We didn't want to play it safe. I tried to rip the entries and be really tight. It worked for me and I was proud of the list."
With his ninth career individual crown, Sehn passed former A&M diver Mark Naftanel, who won eight championships in the old Southwest Conference (one) and the Big 12 Conference (seven) from 1996-99. Sehn also became the winningest male ever at the Big 12 Swimming and Diving Championships.
"It speaks volumes about the support of the administration that we receive here at Texas A&M," Aggie head diving coach Kevin Wright said. "And it speaks to what Mark Naftanel accomplished here. He's certainly the greatest student-athlete I've ever been around. He made only one 'B" during his college career and won eight conference title. That probably won't ever be duplicated.
"Eric is a very talented guy. He works exceptionally hard. There's still room for growth and I want to help him reach his goals. This is one step on the way for him. I'm very proud of the way he has handled all this."
