David Newmann fanned nine hitters in seven innings and the Aggie offense produced 14 hits as the No. 24 Texas A&M baseball team defeated Jacksonville State, 12-0, on Sunday afternoon at Olsen Field.
Newmann (1-0) held the Gamecocks hitless for 6 1/3 innings and faced just two batters over the minimum in only his third start as an Aggie.
?I thought this was the most complete game we have played this year,? A&M head coach Rob Childress said. ?I like to look at the scoreboard and see that we had 14 hits, no errors and a shutout. It doesn?™t get much better than that. We came out and were ready to play today even though we already had the series wrapped up.?
With the win, the Aggies improved their win streak to 10 games and moved to 11-1 overall. The Gamecocks dropped to 2-4.
The 14 hits by the Aggie offense marked the sixth time in the last seven games A&M had double-digit hits. During that span, the Aggies collected a total of 88 hits and have improved their team batting average from .250 to .320.
A&M scored a run in the bottom of the first off JSU starter Ben Tootle (1-1) to take the initial lead. Feltner legged out an infield single and stole second, before scoring on a single to right by Blake Stouffer.
The Aggies scored two more in the bottom of the second to increase their lead to 3-0. Parker Dalton and Brandon Hicks singled with one out and Feltner reached on a slow chopper to short. When shortstop Josh Sanders mishandled the chopper, Dalton scored and Hicks moved to third. Hicks then executed a straight steal of home for the second run of the inning.
In the fourth, Darby Brown raced all the way to third on a dropped flyball by Gamecocks?™ left fielder Clay Whittemore. He scored one hitter later when Kyle Colligan laced a single to left.
The following inning, singles by Hicks and Feltner and a walk to Stouffer loaded the bases with no outs. Darby Brown lifted a sacrifice fly to left and Feltner later scored all the way from second on an infield single by Colligan to make the score 6-0.
The Aggies put the game out of reach in the seventh by sending 11 men to the plate and pushing six runs across. Darby Brown drove in his second run of the game with a single, Josh Stinson plated a run with a single and Dalton scored two with a single to right. Later in the inning, Daman Aaron drew a base-loaded walk and Stouffer drove in his second run of the game with a groundout.
Kirkland Rivers and Gary Campfield each threw a scoreless inning out of the bullpen.
Texas A&M returns to action Tuesday when they host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. at Olsen Field.
