Parker Dalton went 2-for-4 with a double, a home run and four RBI and the Texas A&M bullpen did not allow an earned run in 8 2/3 innings on Saturday as the No. 14 Aggies defeated No. 26 Nebraska, 8-5, at Olsen Field.
Dalton, sealed the A&M win with a two-out, two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth to give Texas A&M a three-run lead.
?There were a lot of heroes today,? A&M head coach Rob Childress said. ?Parker Dalton had two big hits, Blake Stouffer had a big home run and we got great work from Travis Starling, Matt Ueckert and Kyle Nicholson out of the bullpen.?
With the win, A&M improved to 24-6 overall and to 4-4 in Big 12 play. The Huskers dropped to 16-10 and 3-5 in the league. The series decider will be played Sunday at 1 p.m. at Olsen Field.
Ueckert (1-0), who was making just his third outing of the year after recovering from off-season shoulder surgery, scattered seven hits in his five innings of work.
Kyle Nicholson allowed just one hit and fanned four over three-complete innings to earn his third save of the year.
The Aggies found themselves in a hole after the top of the first. With one out, A&M starter Kyle Thebeau walked two hitters and threw two wild pitches to move runners to second and third. Jake Opitz drove in a run with a single off Thebeau?™s foot and Craig Corriston drove in another when he reached on a fielding error by Dalton. Ueckert replaced Thebeau on the mound and allowed a double to Andy Gerch to give Nebraska a 3-0 lead.
Nebraska starter Charlie Shirek also got a quick hook after the Aggies tagged him for six runs on six hits in the bottom of the second. Three straight single by Kyle Colligan, Luke Anders and Josh Stinson, scored one run. Brodie Greene moved two runners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt before Dalton ripped a two-RBI double down the third base line. Brandon Hicks drove in Dalton with a single and Stouffer hit a two-out home run over the wall in right to make the score 6-3.
Thebeau lasted just 1/3 of an inning and allowed three runs on one hit. Shirek (2-3) went 1 2/3 innings and allowed six runs on seven hits.
