The No. 9 Texas A&M baseball team scored four runs in the top of the eighth thanks to a grand slam by Brandon Hicks on Monday afternoon, but No. 7 Oregon State held on the beat the Aggies, 6-5, in a time-shortened final game of the Domino?™s Pizza Aggie Baseball Classic at Olsen Field.
The teams agreed before the game to not start an inning after 5:40 p.m. due to travel plans by Oregon State. The game was called after the top of the eighth.
The loss snapped the Aggies?™ 14-game winning streak and dropped their overall record to 15-2. The Beavers improved to 14-3. Both teams finished with a 3-1 record in the Aggie Classic, but Texas A&M won the championship via the tiebreaker.
?We didn?™t do things early in the game to win it,? A&M head coach Rob Childress said. ?We had our chances to win the game, but we didn?™t do the little things to win the game.?
The Aggies did have their chances early in the game, but were 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position before Hicks?™ grand slam.
Mike Lissman gave the Beavers the early lead in the bottom of the first with a towering solo home run over the wall in left. It was Lissman?™s third homer of the year and it came off A&M starter Kirkland Rivers (0-1).
Oregon State added four runs in the bottom of the third to increase their lead to 5-0. Three Straight singles by Darwin Barney, Joey Wong and Lissman scored the first run of the inning and chased Rivers from the game.
Scott Migl came on in relief and after a fielder?™s choice by Dale Solomon scored the second run of the inning, Jason Ogata hit a two-run homer to left.
Mark Grbavac replaced Beavers?™ starter Anton Maxwell to start the fourth and promptly gave up a lead off home run to Spencer Jackson, his first of the season.
Oregon State added an all-important insurance run in the bottom of the seventh on a RBI single by Braden Wells.
Maxwell (2-0) got the win in a predetermined start, pitching three scoreless innings. Eddie Kunz recorded the last out in the eighth to record his second save of the year.
In the first game of the day, New Mexico (7-11, 1-3 Aggie Classic) defeated Saint Louis (1-9, 1-3 Aggie Classic), 17-5.
Texas A&M returns to action next weekend when they host Florida in a three-game series at Olsen field. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. in Friday?™s series opener.
