Texas A&M opened with a 7-under-par 281 on Wednesday and is three shots out of the lead after the first round of the John A. Burns Intercollegiate at Leilehua Golf Course. The tournament continues through Friday.

A&M was the only team in the 21-team field with all five players breaking par. Martin Piller, Bronson Burgoon and Matt Van Zandt fired 2-under 70s. Bobby Gates and Andrea Pavan had 71s.

The Aggies are tied fo sixth place with UTEP. Auburn, Arizona and San Diego State are tied for the lead at 278, while UNLV and SMU are one shot back at 279.

Auburn's Jay Moseley, Arizona's Tarquin Macmanus and SDSU's Johan Carlssonare lead the individual standings with 6-under 66s.

"We played great today," A&M Coach J.T. Higgins said. "All of our guys broke par but they all felt like they left a lot of shots out there. Our attitudes and the way we handled ourselves was outstanding. We've come a long way since the fall season. We're in great position with 36 holes left to play."
