Senior Miranda Orr fired an even-par 72 on Friday to lead Texas A&M into fifth place after the opening round of the PING/Arizona State Invitational at the Karsten Golf Course.
A&M carded a team score of five-over (293) to trail No. 3-ranked Southern California (281) by 12 strokes going into Saturday?â„¢s second round. The tournament concludes on Sunday.
No. 4 Arizona State is in second at 288, followed by No. 8 Georgia (289) and No. 14 Oklahoma State (292).
A&M leads No. 2 UCLA (294), No. 12 Denver (296), No. 10 Arizona (298), No. 16 California (298), No. 17 Pepperdine (299), No. 24 Vanderbilt (299), No. 22 New Mexico (302), San Jose State (304), No. 23 Stanford (307), San Francisco (310), Washington (310) and Oregon State (312).
USC?â„¢s Dewi Claire Schreefel is the individual leader after posting a four-under 68. Orr is tied for 14th, just four shots off the pace.
A&M freshman Sarah Zwartynski is tied for 22nd (73), sophomores Ashley Freeman (74) and Danielle McVeigh are tied for 32nd (74) and junior Lauren Johnson is tied for 69th (79).
Orr was three-over through 14 holes, but finished fast with three straight birdies and a par.
"I'm so proud of the way the girls handled themselves today," A&M Coach Trelle McCombs said. "They were very poised and confident throughout the round. Our finish today was fantastic and it just goes to show you how important it to finish strong."
