Freshman Sarah Zwartynski fired a three-under-par 69 on Saturday to lift Texas A&M into fourth place after two rounds of the PING/Arizona State Invitational at the Karsten Golf Course.
Zwartynski is tied for third in the individual standings with a two-under total of 73-69=142 and trails leader Dewi Claire Schreefel (68-69=137) of Southern California by five shots heading into Sunday's final round.
No. 3-ranked USC leads the team standings by 11 strokes with a seven-under total of 569. No. 4 Arizona State is in second (580), followed by No. 8 Georgia (582), A&M (293-290=583), No. 12 Denver (586), No. 2 UCLA (590), No. 14 Oklahoma State (591), No. 16 California (599), No. 10 Arizona (600), No. 22 New Mexico (602), San Jose State (605), Washington (605), No. 24 Vanderbilt (606), No. 17 Pepperdine (608), No. 23 Stanford (613), Oregon State (618) and San Francisco (622).
A&M sophomores Ashley Freeman (74-75=149) and Danielle McVeigh (74-75=149) are tied for 30th, junior Lauren Johnson (79-71=150) is tied for 36th and senior Miranda Orr (72-80=152) is tied for 47th.
Zwartynski birdid three of her first four holes and had only one bogey on the day. Johnson had four birdies and three bogeys in her round to bounce back from an opening 79 on Friday.
"We started the day off very strong and just kept sticking to our game plan all day," A&M Coach Trelle McCombs said. "I'm so proud of these girls and their ability to focus today. We made great strides, not just in moving up the leaderboard but also in buidlingconfidence as we head into the postseason."
