Texas A&M pitcher/first baseman Megan Gibson was named one of 25 finalists for the 2008 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year Award, the Amateur Softball Association, the National Governing Body of Softball in the United States, announced today.

This award, which is considered one of the most prestigious honors in women's collegiate softball, is designed to recognize outstanding athletic achievement by female collegiate softball players across the country.

Gibson, the Big 12 career home run and walks leader, has led the Aggies to their best start in conference history (8-0) and for the last 15-straight games has posted a sub-one ERA, currently sitting at 0.93. The two-time All-American has registered six of the Aggies?â„¢ eight Big 12 wins, topping her career high. The Spring, Texas native leads the conference in wins (22), walks (36), doubles (11), shutouts (10), innings pitched (150) and complete games (21).

The Top 25 is comprised of players representing 18 colleges and ten different NCAA Division I Conferences. Among the list are eleven seniors, six juniors, five sophomores and three freshmen.

The list will be narrowed down to 10 on May 7, just a few days before the start of postseason play. It will be reduced again on May 21 to three before the winner is announced at the 2008 NCAA Women?â„¢s College World Series on May 27.

Joining Gibson on the list of finalists representing the Big 12 Conference from the University of Oklahoma are sophomore outfielder Amber Flores and junior pitcher D.J. Mathis.
