Texas A&M?â„¢s Matt Bain and Conor Pollock earned first-team distinction as the 2008 Academic All-Big 12 Conference Men?â„¢s Tennis Team was announced by the league office Tuesday.
Both were among 20 male Big 12 student-athletes honored for their classroom achievements. Bain, a senior right-hander from Georgetown, Texas, made his second all-time appearance on the first team and third overall of his career. He holds a 3.361 grade-point average as a double major in marketing and finance in the prestigious Mays Business School at A&M. A three-time Verizon/Texas A&M scholar-athlete, Bain will graduate in May and has accepted a position in energy trading with Occidental Petroleum Corporation.
Pollock, a junior right-hander from San Antonio, Texas, garnered first-team honors for the second consecutive year with an impressive 3.653 GPA in finance in the Mays Business School. He moved up seven spots to No. 21 nationally in singles in the latest ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings also released on Tuesday and partners with freshman Austin Krajicek for the No. 15-ranked doubles combination in the country. Pollock and Krajicek have put together an undefeated 9-0 dual match record at No. 1 doubles for the Aggies.
Nominated by each institution?â„¢s director of student-athlete support services and the media relations offices, the men?â„¢s tennis academic all-league squad consisted of 14 first-team members combined with six on the second team. First-team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, and the second team are those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of his team?â„¢s scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
