Senior Miranda Orr shot a one-under-par 71 on Friday to lead Texas A&M into a tie for sixth place at the NCAA Women?â„¢s Golf Central Regional at UT Golf Club.
The top eight teams, as well as the top two individuals not on those teams, will advance to the NCAA Championship May 20-23 in Albuquerque. A&M (295-302=597) and Alabama (304-293=597) are tied at 21-over going into Saturday?â„¢s final round, three shots ahead of eighth-place Nebraska (600) and five ahead of nine-place LSU (602).
UCLA leads with a 576 total, followed by Purdue (582), TCU (585), Denver (590) and host Texas (596).
Other team scores are Kent State (604), North Carolina State (604), Florida State (605), Texas Tech (606), East Tennessee State (609), Pepperdine (612), Texas State (616), Notre Dame (620), Washington (622), Harvard (624), Illinois State (633) and Fairleigh Dickinson (695).
TCU?â„¢s Valentine Derrey leads the individual standings at 67-70=137. UCLA?â„¢s Maria Jose Uribe (65-73=138) is one shot back.
A&M freshman Sarah Zwartynski is tied for 19th (72-75=147), sophomore Danielle McVeigh is tied for 23rd (71-78=149), junior Lauren Johnson is tied for 48th (75-78=153), Orr is tied for 56th (83-71=154) and sophomore Ashley Freeman is tied for 86th (77-84=161).
The Aggies were just four-over through 11 holes, but played the final seven in 10-over. Orr had six birdies and five bogeys in her round. She was three-under through 15 holes, but posted consecutive bogeys before closing with a par.
"It just wasn?â„¢t out day today," A&M Coach Trelle McCombs said. "We played hard but made some mistakes we shouldn?â„¢t have made. We will play better tomorrow. We know what our mistakes were and are confident we can overcome them."
