Texas A&M senior pitcher/first baseman Megan Gibson has been named one of four nominees for the 2007-2008 Honda Sports Award, announced by the Collegiate Women Sports Awards organization.
The award will determine the top woman collegiate athlete in softball and the winner, after nationwide balloting, will become a nominee for The Honda-Broderick Cup awarded annually to the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year.
Gibson boasts an impressive 39-1 record and 0.96 ERA in the circle for the Aggies. In 271 innings of work, Gibson has fanned 324 hitters, averaging eight strikeouts per game. The senior hurler has posted double-digit strikeouts in four of her last six games, totaling 14 on the season. The Spring, Texas-native is holding opponents to a stifling .165 batting average, limiting her opposition to under a run per game.
A threat on both side of the ball, Gibson is hitting .345 at the plate this season. The three-time NFCA All-American has driven in a team-leading 48 RBIs off 59 hits, including 15 doubles, a triple and 13 homeruns.
The first player in conference history to earn both Pitcher and Player of the year honors in the same season, Gibson led the Big 12 in walks (51), wins (39), shutouts (20), innings pitched (271), strikeouts (324) and complete games (38).
In addition to the honor of this selection, American Honda will donate $1,000 to the women?â„¢s athletic fund of each nominee?â„¢s university. The winner?â„¢s program will receive $5,000.
