TURNBERRY, Scotland- Texas A&M’s Andrea Pavan defeated Steven McEwan 2 and 1 on Thursday to advance to the quarterfinals of the British Amateur at Turnberry Golf Course.
Pavan will play Andrew Sullivan on Friday morning, followed immediately by the semifinal round. The finals will be played on Saturday. The winner will receive a berth in the 2009 Masters in Augusta, Ga.
Pavan was A&M’s second leading scorer last season with a 73.84 average and placed fifth at the Big 12 Championship. He tied for second at the Barona Collegiate Cup. Pavan is bidding to become A&M’s second British Amateur champion. Philip Parkin captured the crown in 1984.
Turnberry is regarded as one of the world’s premier courses and has played host to three British Opens and will again host the championship in 2009.
