COLLEGE STATION, Texas- Texas A&M volleyball associate head coach John Corbelli helped direct the U.S. Women’s Junior National Team to the gold medal at the NORCECA Women’s Junior Continental Championship in Saltillo, Mexico.
Corbelli, who served as an assistant coach on the women’s 1984 USA Olympic Team and is entering his 16th season at A&M, was an assistant coach for the junior national team which defeated Dominican Republic, 25-21, 25-20, 25-18, to win the gold medal. Three-time U.S. Olympian Paula Weishoff, who was coached by Corbelli as a member of the 1984 Olympic team that captured a silver medal, served as head coach of the junior team.
With the win, Team USA avenged an opening day loss to Dominican Republic, USA’s only loss of the entire tournament. Also by finishing in the top three in the tournament, USA earns a spot in the 2009 FIVB Women’s Junior World Championship.
Corbelli now sets his sights on A&M’s upcoming season. The Aggies report Friday, August 8 and being practice August 9. A&M plays its season opener August 29 against LSU at the Bluejay Invitational in Omaha, Neb.
