COLLEGE STATION, Texas- The Texas A&M football team opened fall camp on Monday evening with a two-hour workout in shorts and helmets on the grass practice fields adjacent to the McFerrin Athletic Center.
“It looked like a first practice,” Aggie head coach Mike Sherman said. “We did some good things. I thought the guys had some good retention from this past spring, but we do have to clean some things up. The younger guys kind of bring it down a bit because they don’t know what they’re doing just yet, so that makes it a little bit sloppy, but we’ll be a lot cleaner tomorrow.”
Sherman was especially pleased with the play of the receiving corps, noting only a few dropped passes on day one of practice.
With the first few days of camp falling during final exams for the summer session, Sherman was only slightly concerned with the flow of his first fall practice at the helm of the Aggie program.
“I think the pace was a little bit slow tonight, we need to get a lot faster,” Sherman said. “But, a lot of that is the first day. You also have to understand that this is the toughest time to practice, because the kids are still in school. They are studying for finals and there is a lot on them. Considering the circumstances we got a lot done tonight, but it has to get a lot faster. We have to practice faster.”
A&M will return to practice on Tuesday with an evening workout in shorts, scheduled for the grass practice fields.
