KALAMAZOO, Mich.- The Texas A&M men’s tennis contingent of top seeds Austin Krajicek (pronounced CRY-check) and Wil Spencer moved on to the round of 16 at the USTA Boys 18’s National Championships held at Stowe Stadium.
Fifth-seeded Krajicek, who turned 18 in June and hails from Brandon, Fla., defeated Mousheg Hovhannisyan, 6-4, 6-4, in the round of 32. He also countered a first-set rally by John Lamble in the round of 64 by closing out the match on a strong note, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4.
No. 16 seeded Spencer, a native of Ponce de Leon, Fla., who is making his fifth Kalamazoo appearance, took care of Isamu Tachibana, 6-2, 6-2, in the round of 64, prior to defeating Daniel Nguyen, 7-6 (0), 6-4, in the round of 32.
Meanwhile, the top-seeded doubles combination of Krajicek and Jarmere Jenkins of College Park, Ga., advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over the Northern California duo of Mateusz Kecki and Aba Omodele-Lucien in the round of 16. The prestigious juniors tournament runs through Sunday, Aug. 10 on the campus of Kalamazoo College.
USTA Futures Pro Circuit Update?...Senior All-American Conor Pollock (San Antonio, Texas) reached the second round of the singles main draw in Milwaukee, Wis. Pollock, ranked No. 1237 in the world as an amateur, was too much for fellow American William Boe-Wiegaard winning in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0. He will challenge No. 1024-ranked American Sheeva Parbhu tomorrow for a spot in Friday’s quarterfinals. In doubles play, Pollock and Parbhu teamed up and lost a tough third-set tiebreaker, 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-7), to Americans Brian Compton and Jim Slonac in the opening round.
