GNATZIG NAMED BIG 12 PLAYER OF THE WEEK
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Texas A&M junior midfielder Amber Gnatzig was named Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week, it was announced by the conference office Tuesday.
Gnatzig earned the honor for the first time in her career after an outstanding weekend against No. 2 North Carolina and Indiana.
The Humble, Texas, product scored two goals against the Tar Heels and set up the first goal in a win against the Hoosiers. She helped bring A&M back from a 2-0 deficit in the second half of the UNC game, becoming the first Aggie to put up two goals against the 19-time national champions. Gnatzig's goals were a career high and also marked just the second time A&M has scored twice against North Carolina.
A sport management major, Gnatzig is a tri-captain who tallied 12 points in 2007 which ranked first among returning players. As a freshman she was named to the Big 12 All-Newcomer Team and the Soccer Buzz Central Region All-Freshman team.
Gnatzig is the 36th A&M soccer player to be selected as a Big 12 player of the week. The last Aggie to receive the honor was sophomore Rachel Shipley last week.
Aggie soccer moved up in almost every national poll this week with its highest ranking at No. 11 by both the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and TopDrawerSoccer.com. A&M jumped five spots in the Soccer Buzz Top 30.
The Ags travel to Blacksburg, Va., this weekend for the Hawthorn Suites Invitational hosted by Virginia Tech. A&M kicks off against Virginia Tech on Friday and takes on No. 17 Wake Forest on Sunday.
