Sept. 20, 2008

ELM GROVE, Wis. - The Texas A&M women's team won two of three doubles matches against Alabama and three of seven singles matches against Wisconsin on Day 2 of the 33rd Annual Milwaukee Tennis Classic, hosted by Marquette University and the Western Racquet Club.

"It was mixed reviews today," A&M coach Bobby Kleinecke said. "I was proud with our comeback in the doubles. Basically we snatched victory from defeat in doubles, but snatched defeat from victory in the singles for the most part."

A&M opened the day taking on Alabama in doubles. Elzé Potgieter defeated Paulina Bigos and Tiffany Welcher of Alabama, 8-5, at the No. 1 line. At the No. 2 line, A&M's Morgan Frank and Sheri Olivier were down 5-0 but came back to win 8-6.

"The girls scrapped and were able to win two of three doubles matches, but we are short a player with Stephanie Davidson being out (illness)," Kleinecke said.

Alabama's Bianca Svensson and Lindsey Taylor prevented the doubles sweep by defeating Christina Amo and Lauren Santacroce, 8-5.

The Aggies let some matches slip away against Wisconsin in singles.

"We were in control at the start, but it was like we became afraid to close out the matches," Kleinecke said. "We were not controlling play or making adjustments on several of the courts, and it cost us."

Frank and Olivier notched straight set wins, and Amo got a three-set victory over Erin Jobe. Meanwhile, three of A&M's four singles losses went to three sets.

"Morgan, Sheri and Christina did well and came through with wins, but we were up a set or had set point on some of the other courts and couldn't close it out. We let some matches slip away. It's a young team, and we have to learn from this. The losses today haven't hurt us if we learned the lesson. I feel like the girls will come back tomorrow and mean business."

The Aggies conclude the three-day tournament on Sunday, taking on Alabama in singles at 11 a.m. and Wisconsin in doubles at 1 p.m.

A post system will be used to determine the champions of the four-team tournament, which concludes on Sunday afternoon. Fall season results count toward only individual records and do not count as a team competition.
