ELM GROVE, Wis. - The Texas A&M women's tennis team won four of seven singles matches and two of three doubles matches on the final day of the 33rd Annual Milwaukee Tennis Classic, hosted by Marquette University and the Western Racquet Club.
"This tournament showed what we need to work on, which is exactly what these fall tournaments are meant to do," A&M coach Bobby Kleinecke said. "We got a lot out of the tournament, and we know what we need to work on to get stronger."
The Aggies opened the final day taking on Alabama in singles. Freshman Sheri Olivier highlighted singles play for the Aggies, defeating Meritt Emery, 6-4, 1-6, 10-7, to go undefeated in the tournament at the No. 4 line. In addition, Kleinecke complimented Aggie freshman Lauren Santacroce, who had a come-from-behind victory in the final match at the No. 5 line after losing the first set and also trailing in the tiebreaker.
"I was proud of Sheri for winning all of her singles matches this weekend, and for Lauren for showing good composure and being able to handle the pressure and come away with the win," Kleinecke said.
In doubles, Elzé Potgieter were crowned tournament doubles champions after defeating Marquette's Paola Calderon and Gilian Hush, 8-4, at the No. 1 line. Santacroce and Ashley Turpin picked up the other win for the Aggies, defeating Maggie Wilson and Elly Strother, 8-2, at the No. 3 line.
"Coming into the tournament, I didn't know where we would be in doubles," Kleinecke said, "and to win two of three of the doubles matches each day was a great accomplishment, especially with Stephanie Davidson (illness) being out of the lineup. I was proud of Elzé and Christi for winning all three of their doubles matches."
The Aggies return to competition Oct. 10 and 11, with several players competing in the Midland Invitational in Midland, Texas, and the other competing in the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Championships in Flushing Meadow, N.Y.
