WACO, Texas - Texas A&M junior Chris Chirico (pronounced CHUH-REE-co) advanced to the consolation semifinals of the top singles flight of the Baylor HEB Intercollegiate Invitational held Saturday at the Baylor Tennis Center.
Chirico (Philadelphia, Pa.) downed 16th-seeded and No. 61-ranked Piotr Banas of Louisiana-Lafayette, 6-2, 6-2, in the third round, and later defeated Mike Pavlov of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 10-8, in the third-set tiebreaker of the quarterfinals, 1-6, 6-4, 1-0. The former Atlantic 10 Freshman of the Year while at Saint Joseph's prior to transferring to A&M last season, Chirico will face Michael Breler of Texas Tech tomorrow morning at 8:30 a.m.
Other A&M highlights at the three-day tournament included sophomore Wil Spencer (Ponce de Leon, Fla.) who moved on to the singles quarterfinals with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Phil Stephens of Tulsa in the round of 16. He later fell to top-ranked and top-seeded Oleksandr Nedovyesov of Oklahoma State, 6-3, 6-4, in the quarterfinals.
Junior Marcus Lunt (San Antonio, Texas) also reached the quarterfinals of the B singles draw defeating Cody Hall of Air Force in the round of 16, 6-2, 6-0, before falling to Arlen Domoney of Air Force in three sets, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.
