COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Junior Emily Peterson was named the Coaches' Spotlight of the Week for her efforts in the opening weekend of Big 12 play.
From Tulsa, Okla., Peterson started both matches last weekend and led a defense that held the ninth-ranked Texas Longhorns scoreless in a 0-0 tie in double overtime. According to the A&M coaching staff, Peterson stood out and made a great impact in the back line.
Peterson was also a mainstay on defense against Baylor, holding the Bears to just two shots, including zero in the second half. A&M was on the attack most of the game and Peterson's previous experience on offense added to the Aggies' attack.
"Petey" as she is referred to by her teammates, takes care of business off the field as well maintaining a 3.96 grade point average as a finance major.
Peterson redshirted last season after sustaining a foot injury. As a sophomore, she was named the team's defensive MVP in addition to being named to the All-Big 12 first team, Soccer BUZZ All-Central Region second team and NSCAA/addidas All-Central third team. Peterson also received the team's "Newcomer of the Year" award as a freshman.
Peterson is the daughter of Dennis and Peggy Peterson and has two older brothers, Eric and Adam.
The Coaches' Spotlight of the Week is new this season as the A&M coaching staff highlights a player who made a great impact in team success the previous week.
A&M returns to the pitch on Friday hosting No. 10 Oklahoma State at the Aggie Soccer Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
