TULSA, Okla. - Four Texas A&M men's tennis players advanced in the pre-qualifying draw of the D'Novo ITA All-American Championships held Friday afternoon at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
The first day of action proved successful for the Aggies as sophomore Kayvon Karimi (Dallas, Texas) fended off Joe Wood of New Mexico in three sets, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1, to earn his first victory of the fall season. Freshmen Colin Hoover (Victoria, Texas) and Austin Klores (Franklin, Texas) also picked up straight-set victories in the opening round. Hoover defeated Pat Metham of Arizona, 6-2, 6-4, while Klores dispatched Ty Schaub of Ohio State, 6-2, 6-2.
Ninth-seeded Chris Chirico (Philadelphia, Pa.) received a first-round bye and will face Nicholas Boulieris of Marquette tomorrow in the second round at 10 a.m. Karimi will take on 17th-seeded Albert Jou of Tulsa and Klores versus Derek Stephens of North Carolina State in the second round at 8 a.m. Meanwhile, Hoover moved on to the third round due to a walkover and will compete against Hugo Vidal of Southern Illinois at 3 p.m.
Competition in the pre-qualifying draw continues through Sunday, while the qualifying draw begins on Monday and main draw on Thursday.
