TULSA, Okla. - Texas A&M senior All-American Conor Pollock (pronounced PAUL-luck) still had fuel in his tank as he went 3-0 after day one of competition in the main draw of the D'Novo ITA All-American Championships held Thursday at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
Pollock, ranked No. 17 nationally in singles and the No. 16 seed in the field, took care of business early beating two nationally-ranked opponents in a row to move on tomorrow's round of 16. The San Antonio, Texas, native defeated No. 101-ranked Peter Capkovic of Princeton, 6-4, 6-2, in the opening round and later won an 8-6 second-set tiebreaker to edge No. 24-ranked Cory Parr of Wake Forest, 6-4, 7-6. Pollock awaits a matchup with eighth-ranked Justin Kronauge of Ohio State.
In doubles action, Pollock and sophomore All-American Austin Krajicek (Brandon, Fla.) enjoyed a pre-Big 12 Conference meeting with the Nebraska combination of David Bendheim and Calin Paar in the opening round. Pollock and Krajicek, ranked No. 4 nationally and one of the top seeds at the tourney, claimed an 8-4 victory over the Huskers' top duo to advance to tomorrow's round of 16.
Sophomore Wil Spencer (Ponce de Leon, Fla.), who reached the singles main draw with an umblemished 3-0 record in the qualifier, got past Dominic Inglot of Virginia, 7-6, 6-3, in the opening round. Hometown favorite and sixth-ranked All-American Arnau Brugues of Tulsa ended Spencer's impressive four-match run with a 6-3, 6-4, setback in the round of 32.
