COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Freshman Rebecca Arbino threw a complete-game shutout to lead the White team over the Maroon team, 6-0, in first game of the Maroon and White series at the Aggie Softball Complex on Monday.
From Clovis, Calif., Arbino gave up just four hits and added three strikeouts in the circle. Sophomore Erin Glasco, sophomore Taryn Broussard each added a hit.
Sophomore Natalie Villarreal led the Maroon team at the plate going 1-for-2 with a walk and a sacrifice bunt. Sophomore Eden Morris went 1-for-3 with a walk.
White got on the scoreboard first in the third inning after three consecutive singles. Broussard started the hitting with a single to left field that a sliding Spittler could not quite bring in. Rau followed with a single to shallow center field and Tovar's worm-burner down the first-base line plated Broussard from second for a 1-0 lead.
Junior Macie Morrow led off the fourth frame with a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Glasco. The Sugar Land, Texas, native then scored after a wild pitch and a passed ball to increase White's lead to 2-0.
Maroon's Morris, Spittler and Villarreal loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth, but an infield ground out with two outs ended Maroon's scoring chances.
White plated a run for the third-straight inning with two outs in the fifth. Glasco made contact with a solid ball up the middle and Broussard followed with a towering fly ball to the outfield wall. Glasco was all the way to third before the ball was dropped in the outfield and the senior catcher was able to cross the plate.
In the top of the sixth, White loaded the bases with no outs, but sophomore Rhiannon Kliesing threw two consecutive strikeouts and forced a fly out in foul territory to hold the score at 3-0 in favor of White.
A three-run seventh inning sealed the deal for the White team, 6-0. The frame was highlighted by a two-run double to left by Rau.
The next game in the Maroon and White series is slated for Wednesday at 4 p.m.
