COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Five Texas A&M men's tennis players advanced in singles, while three teams moved on in doubles after the first day of play at the 2008 Wilson/ITA South Central Region Championships held Saturday at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center.
Third-seeded and No. 17-ranked Conor Pollock (San Antonio, Texas) rolled past Rodrigo Morgado of UTSA with a 6-2, 6-4 straight-set victory to reach tomorrow's round of 32 in the singles main draw. He will face James Wilson of Texas Tech at 10 a.m. Pollock has already qualified for the ITA National Indoors via the ITA All-American Championships and came close to winning the regional title as the runner-up a year ago.
Ninth-seeded Wil Spencer (Ponce de Leon, Fla.) followed Pollock's lead as both Aggies advanced to the round of 32. Krajicek easily won a love set, before opponent David Subirats of UT Arlington, retired in the second. Meanwhile, Spencer improved to 8-2 on the season with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Javier Pulgar Garcia. Krajicek will test Dmitry Novikov of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi tomorrow at 10:30 a.m., while Spencer will take on Dennis Polyakov of Rice at 10 a.m.
Junior Wil Spencer as the third-seeded doubles team in the draw with an 8-3 tally over Cameron Nash and Jack Seider of TCU.
"We went 9-4 in singles and 4-1 in doubles, so it was a very good first day for us," Texas A&M head coach Steve Denton said. "I was very pleased with how well we played and everyone's effort. We had a good home crowd today and we played with a lot of energy. We will see a lot of hard-fought matches tomorrow."
Sophomore Kayvon Karimi (Dallas, Texas) went 2-0 on Saturday with an opening-round victory over Kudakwashe Nyatoti of Prairie View A&M, 6-2, 6-4, and later a 6-4, 7-5 win over Mindaugas Celedinas of UTA to move on to the round of 32. Karimi will take on second-seeded and No. 14-ranked Bruno Rosa of Rice tomorrow at 11 a.m.
Junior Marcus Lunt (San Antonio, Texas) played through a grueling opening-round match versus Sam Garfoth-Bles of Rice. After dropping the first set, 4-6, and coming back to win the second, 6-3, Lunt kept on fighting and won the third-set tiebreaker, 8-6. He later lost to seventh-seeded Olivier Sajous of Texas, 6-4, 6-3, in the round of 64.
"Kayvon came through for us with two wins today which is good for his confidence," said Denton on the individual highlights of the day. "Marcus also had a good first match and showed a lot of fight and guts in his third set."
In doubles action, the top-seeded and fourth-ranked Aggie combination of Pollock and Krajicek won a love-game versus Jose Garcia and Kudakwashe Nyatoti of Prairie View A&M, 8-0, in the opening round, as did freshman Marcus Lunt over Max Stratmann and Rodrigo Morgado of UTSA. A&M will continue doubles play tomorrow at 4 p.m.
Admission is free and open to the public throughout the four-day regional tournament. The top two finalists in singles and the winner of doubles will move on to the prestigious ITA National Indoors on Nov. 6-9 on the campus of the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Va.
