FORT WORTH, Texas - Texas A&M came up short and was eliminated in the quarterfinal rounds today at the ITA Southwest Regional at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center on the TCU campus in Fort Worth, Texas.
Christina Amo and Ashley Turpin's run came to an end as they fell to No. 9 seed Maria Babanova and Nina Munch-Soegaard of TCU, 8-1. A&M teammates Elzé Potgieter also were eliminated in the quarterfinals as they fell to the No. 3 seed, Megan Falcon and Mykala Hedberg of LSU, 8-3
Lauren Santacroce, A&M's lone representative in the quarterfinals of the singles main draw, was topped by No. 4 seed Taylor Ormond of Baylor, 6-2, 6-1.
In consolation matches, Krista Damico of Texas defeated Potgieter, 4-6, 6-1, 10-8. Stephanie Davidson advanced in the south draw as Nicole Briceno of SMU defaulted. Davidson then fell to Abby Liu of Texas, 6-1, 6-2.
"We did very well in the beginning but kind of filtered out at the end and didn't finish as strong as we would have liked," A&M coach Bobby Kleinecke said. "That is something that we are going to address. We didn't have the energy at the end that we needed.
"There were some very good results overall, and I'm pleased with the tournament, and we were able to work on some things. The thing about it is that we have very high expectations and we have to step back and look at the whole picture."
Davidson, who missed the Milwaukee Tennis Invitational at the beginning of the fall season because of an illness, will compete in the North Texas Invitational, Nov. 7-8, in Denton, Texas. Up to two other Aggies might also compete in the event, while the other players are finished with the fall season.
A&M opens the spring season Jan. 24 against Denver at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center at 1 p.m.
