COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Game four of the Aggie Baseball Fall World Series was suspended after six-and-one-half innings Tuesday afternoon at Olsen Field.
The Farmers and the Plowboys were deadlocked at nine in the middle of the seventh when upcoming class obligations would have shrunk both teams' rosters down too small to continue, prompting the coaching staff to stop the contest.
The game will resume on Wednesday at 5 p.m. and will be immediately followed by the fifth and final game of the Fall World Series. The Farmers hold a 2-1 lead and can clinch the series and the Omaha Cup with a victory in game four.
If the Plowboys can complete their comeback, the champion of all 12 weeks of fall competition will ride on the final nine innings of the fifth and deciding FWS game.
The Farmers opened up a quick 5-0 lead on Tuesday with a four-run first, capped by a three-run opposite-field home run to left by catcher Joe Patterson.
Down 5-0 entering the the third, Plowboys catcher Andrew Nettune, Kyle Colligan and Scott Arthur all followed with singles to load the bases with no outs, but Farmers starter Scott Migl punched out the next two batters and got an infield grounder to end the inning and the threat.
Gonzalez added a one-out RBI single in the fourth to pull the Plowboys to within three at 5-2, but Farmers right fielder Brooks Raley drove in a run with a groundout in the last of the inning and Luke Anders followed one batter later with a two-out RBI single to extend the lead to five.
After Migl retired the first batter of the sixth, a walk followed by an infield single and a pair of hit batsmen forced in a run. That brought the tying man to the plate in Arthur, who responded with a two-run double to right center to cut the lead to two and chase Migl. One batter later, Nick Fleece's sacrifice fly off reliever Ross Stripling made the score 7-6.
A two-run single by Luke Anders off Fleece in the bottom of the inning pushed the Farmers' lead back to three, but the lead would be short-lived as the Plowboys scored three two-out runs in the seventh to tie the game at nine. Colligan drove in the first with a single through the left side before Arthur tallied another two-run double to right center and chase Stripling from the game. Jordan Chambless entered in relief and retired the only batter he faced to end the inning, and the game was suspended shortly thereafter.
The Farmers will be batting to lead off the bottom of the seventh when play resumes Wednesday at 5 p.m. Admission is free and fans are encouraged to attend. Game five will follow regardless of the outcome of the suspended contest. Wednesday's action will wrap up fall workouts for the back-to-back Big 12 champion Aggies, who are set to open the 2009 season on February 20 against Wright State at Olsen Field.
