CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Junior Ashley Freeman fired an even-par 72 on Friday to lead Texas A&M into a tie for fourth place after the opening round of the Tar Heel Invitational at the Finley Golf Course.

A&M carded a team score of 13-over-par (301) and trails co-leaders Wake Forest (294) and Virginia (294) by seven strokes going into Saturday's second round. The final round for the 18-team event is scheduled for Sunday.

Host North Carolina is in third at 299 and Louisville (301) is tied with the Aggies. Freeman is one shot out of the individual lead, which is shared by five players at one-under.

A&M also had strong efforts from senior Lauren Johnson, who posted a 73, and sophomore Crystal Reeves and sophomore Alexa Porter each carded 82.

"We had a little trouble getting that fourth score today but we are so close to something really special," A&M Coach Trelle McCombs said. "I look for us to put up a great round tomorrow. Our four and five spot aren't satisfied and are ready to help the others."
