AUSTIN, Texas - Texas A&M men's tennis player Marcus Lunt advanced to the round of 16 in the flight "A" singles draw of the University of Texas Invitational held Friday afternoon at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center.
Lunt, a junior from San Antonio, Texas, defeated Jon Wiegand of Texas, 7-6, 6-3, in the opening round and later upended fifth-seeded Marco Verdasco of Oregon, 6-1, 3-6, 6-4, in the round of 32. He will face Andre Moreira of UTSA tomorrow at 8:30 a.m.
Freshman Colin Hoover (Victoria, Texas) also got past the opening round in the flight "B" singles draw by bageling Devon Harley of Lamar, 6-0, 6-0, and later followed it up with a 6-4, 6-1 straight-set victory over Sho Higuchi of Oregon in the round of 16. Hoover will continue play tomorrow at 8:30 a.m.
Meanwhile, sophomore Patrick Dean (Dallas, Texas) fell to Daniel Moreiras of UTSA, 6-3, 6-2, in the round of 32. Play continues through Sunday. Lunt and Hoover will also compete in the doubles draw beginning at 4:30 p.m.
