COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Mary Batis, a junior outside hitter at Texas A&M, has been named to the 2008 Academic All-Big 12 Volleyball Second Team, the league office announced.
The sport management major from San Antonio, Texas, is making her second consecutive appearance on the team after also earning the honor in her first year of eligibility as a sophomore last year.
Nominated by each institution's director of student-athlete support services and media relations offices, the 2008 volleyball academic all-league squad consists of 40 first team members combined with eight on the second team. First team members have recorded a 3.20 or better grade-point average, while the second team are those with a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or in the two previous semesters and have participated in 60 percent of her team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
Batis has started every match in her three-year career and leads this year's team with 3.36 kills, 2.74 digs and 3.78 points per set.
Batis and the Aggies (12-14, 7-9 Big 12) return to action tonight, taking on the Oklahoma Sooners at McCasland Field House in Norman. First serve is at 7 p.m.
