COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Sarah Ammerman, an outside hitter on the Texas A&M volleyball team, has been named the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week, the conference office announced today.
The 6-2 junior from Parker, Colo., led the Big 12 in points (5.50) and kills (5.00) per set, while averaging a .356 hitting percentage in the Aggies' two victories last week. Ammerman had 10 kills in the second set alone at Oklahoma and finished with 26 kills, the most by an A&M player this season and one kill shy of her career-high. Ammerman, who finished the match with 13 digs to record her 10th double-double of the season, also tied A&M's season high in points with 27 against the Sooners.
In the sweep against Colorado, Ammerman tallied a match-high 14 kills and tied her career high with a .545 hitting percentage. It marked the fifth consecutive match she has posted double-digit kills. Ammerman also contributed nine digs, four blocks and an ace for a match-high 17 points.
Ammerman garners the accolade for the first time in her career, and she also becomes the first A&M player to be tabbed player of the week by the Big 12 this season. Others honored this week are Michelle Kocher (Texas) for Rookie of the Week, and Ashley Mass (Iowa State) and Jennifer Doris (Texas) as Co-Defensive Players of the Week for matches of Nov. 17-23.
A&M (14-14, 9-9 Big 12), riding a four-match winning streak and still contending for an at-large berth to the NCAA tournament, closes out the home portion of the regular season Wednesday with a must-win match against the Texas Tech Red Raiders. First serve is slated for 6:30 p.m. at G. Rollie White Coliseum. It will be the final volleyball match to be played at the Holler House for at least the next three years.
