Senior Matt Bain clinched a tight 4-3 victory for the second time in four days as the No. 20 Texas A&M men?™s tennis team defeated No. 22 Wake Forest at the Mitchell Tennis Center on Tuesday.
Bain, who also clinched the Aggies?™ 4-3 win over TCU on Saturday, knocked off the Demon Deacons?™ Carlos Salmon, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (4), to rally A&M past Wake Forest. Bain fought off three match points to get into the third-set tiebreaker, but quickly disposed of the hard-serving Salmon 7-4 in the breaker.
?It was a blast,? Bain said. ?It was a tough match the whole time. The guy had a huge serve. I was just scrapping the whole time. That?™s kind of the story of whole match. I was just the last one out there, because it was a total team victory.?
The Aggies had to win four of six singles matches for the second straight match to earn the victory after dropping the doubles point. The Aggies dropped the first set in five of six singles matches.
?It was a great win,? second-year Aggie head coach Steve Denton said. ?They showed a lot of character out there. We made it hard on ourselves by losing the doubles point, and we?™ve struggled in a couple of spots, but this team has been resilient and showed a lot of fight. They have a little bit of a ?'never say die?™ attitude.?
Wake Forest made 2-0 with a win at the No. 6 singles line before the Aggies got on the board with No. 31 Conor Pollock?™s 6-3, 6-4 victory over No. 53 Cory Parr of Wake.
When A&M?™s Chris Chirico evened the score at 2-2 with a 1-6, 7-5, 6-2 win over Jonathan Wolf at the No. 4 line, the three remaining matches were all on-serve in the third set. Wake Forest took a 3-2 lead when No. 73 Steve Forman knocked off A&M?™s Austin Krajicek, 6-7 (0), 6-4, 6-4, at No. 2 singles.
Aggie freshman Wil Spencer set up Bain?™s heroics with a gutty 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-2 win over Mariusz Adamski. After dropping the first set, Spencer clawed back into the match by taking the second set with a 7-5 win in a tiebreaker. Once in the third set, Spencer methodically disposed of the fiery Adamski 6-2.
The Aggies close out a four-match homestand on Wednesday with a 6 p.m. match against Indiana at the Mitchell Tennis Center.
