Senior All-American Megan Gibson threw a one-hit shutout and added two RBIs as the seventh-ranked Texas A&M softball team run-ruled (8-0) the 18th-ranked Baylor Lady Bears in front 1,297 fans on Wednesday night at Getterman Stadium.
The victory moved the Aggies to 32-6 on the season and 4-0 in Big 12 play while Baylor fell to 18-10, 1-3 in league play with the loss.
?I am excited about the way our kids played tonight,? A&M head coach Jo Evans said. ?I talked to them about the last time we played Baylor and how we were aggressive; that we have momentum coming into this game and we need to use it. We need to remember what we?™ve been doing these last three games. I thought our kids looked great.?
A six-run second inning propelled the Aggies to the 8-0 victory. With one out junior Holly Ridley drew a walk to start things off for A&M. The Aggie batters logged five hits in the frame and Jami Lobpries drew a walk to keep the inning alive and chase Baylor starting pitcher Kirsten Shortridge (4-3) after just one and one-third innings of work.
Brittany Turner worked the remaining four and two-thirds innings for the Lady Bears, but was not able to shut the door on the Aggie offense, allowing two more runs to come home off four hits.
A&M added single spots in the fifth and the sixth. Ridley tripled with two-outs in the fifth and moved home on a throwing error by Baylor second baseman KJ Freeland.
Kelsey Spittler scored the run that put the Aggies up 8-0 in the sixth. The freshman reached on a single through the right side. Macie Morrow doubled moving Spittler to third. Lobpries reached on a fielder?™s choice and a poor fielding play by Alex Coyler allowed Spittler to reach home safely.
Gibson remained a perfect 19-0 in the circle with the victory. In seven complete, she fanned three batters and surrendered just one walk.
?I am running out of stuff to say about Gibson,? Evans said. ?She was terrific tonight, again. I keep using this word, because I can?™t think of anything better, but Gibson is stingy. She?™s not giving balls on the plate and she is getting ahead of batters and doesn?™t make mistakes. I just thought she looked in total control again tonight.?
Spittler ended the game going 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored and two RBIs.
A&M returns home for a two-game series against the Missouri Tigers on Saturday and Sunday. First pitch on Saturday is set for 2 p.m. at the Aggie Softball Complex.
