COLLEGE STATION, Texas- The Texas A&M football team geared up for its second scrimmage of fall camp with two spirited and energetic workouts on Friday. The squad worked out in full pads in the morning on the Coolidge Practice Fields before moving inside the McFerrin Athletic Center in shorts and helmets in the afternoon.
“I am really excited about today,” A&M coach Mike Sherman said. “We had some real crisp practices and got a lot done. The guys stepped up and made more plays. We practiced a lot of situations today and we accomplished a good bit more than I thought we were going to. The kids responded real well and I’m excited about that.”
Sherman noted the strong play of the receiving corps on the day.
“I was very encouraged by them today,” Sherman said. “Guys were catching the ball that hadn’t been before. Guys were making spectacular plays?-we probably made more today than we have made all camp, and that’s encouraging.”
Texas Governor Rick Perry (A&M Class of ’72), former A&M head coach R.C. Slocum and Aggie Heisman Trophy winner John David Crow were on the sidelines for the afternoon practice, while in attendance at the morning workout was former all-pro defensive tackle and current Pittsburgh Steelers scout “Mean” Joe Greene.
Sherman also welcomed in to town on Friday a special group of retired high school football coaches and A&M assistants, who spent the day with the team and observing practice. Among those in attendance were Marty Criswell (Bryan), Wayne Hooks (Cy Falls), Ross Rogers (A&M Consolidated, Harker Heights) and Joe Washington (Port Arthur Lincoln) along with former Aggie assistants John Pearce, Melvin Robertson and Alan Weddell.
“They’ve had a great time,” Sherman said. “They are here for the weekend, where they will sit in on our meetings and watch practice. All of us coaches and players earn a great debt of gratitude to the high school coaches in the state of Texas for what they’ve done. Even though these coaches are retired, they have impacted many, many colleges and many, many men both inside and outside the state of Texas. It’s important to recognize them and this weekend is about them.”
Texas A&M will hold its second scrimmage of the fall on Saturday beginning at 7:30 a.m. at Kyle Field. The scrimmage is open to students, former students and A&M faculty or staff. Per fall camp regulations, cameras, cell phones and audio/video equipment are not allowed and fans are asked to remain in the stands throughout the workout. Visitors may enter the stadium through gate 5, which is located between the Netum Steed weight room and the alumni side (west side) of Kyle Field.
