WACO, Texas - Texas A&M freshman Bri Young scored in the 80th minute to lead the seventh-ranked Aggie soccer team to a 1-0 shutout against Baylor at the Betty Lou Mays Field on Sunday evening.
A&M (8-1-1, 1-0-1 Big 12) remains undefeated on the road and earned its first Big 12 victory, while the Bears (4-5-1, 0-1-0 Big 12) dropped their league opener at home.
The lone goal of the match from Young came on a free kick from about 40 yards after Baylor was called for a foul. The Castle Pines North, Colo., native used her powerful right foot to launch a shot that went off keeper Gianna Quintana and in as Young netted her second goal of the season and first game-winner.
A&M controlled possession and was on the attack nearly the entire game. The Aggies outshot Baylor 23-2 and earned 11 corner kicks while the Bears earned zero. The A&M defense did not allow Baylor one shot in the second half.
Sophomore Kelly Dyer posted her second straight shutout in goal and third of the year. She made one save as the Aggie defense stifled almost every Baylor attack.
Young and sophomore Alyssa Mautz led the offense with four shots apiece.
One shot by Mautz was in the 51st minute. Sophomore Laura Grace Robinson in the penalty area. Robinson's shot to the near post was scooped up by Quintana.
A&M was in its attacking third much of the game and forced the Bears' keeper to make eight saves.
"Baylor played tough, but I'm real proud of our players," said head coach G Guerrieri. "Our midfield was just dominant and I thought our team played very well. We're on track and now we know we're going to have a really tough opponent in Oklahoma State on Friday night."
A&M returns to the Aggie Soccer Stadium for more Big 12 action on Friday taking on No. 12 Oklahoma State at 7:30 p.m.
