COLLEGE STATION, Texas--Texas A&M will be well represented at the third annual Texas vs. The Nation All-Star Football Game held at the Sun Bowl in El Paso, Texas, this Saturday, Jan. 31.
Current Texas A&M System Board of Regent Gene Stallings will serve as the head coach of the Texas squad for the second straight year. Aggie senior players Justin Brantly, Danny Gorrer and Cyril Obiozor will compete for the Texas squad.
Stallings played football at Texas A&M under Coach Paul "Bear" Bryant and went on to serve as a head coach at both Texas A&M and Alabama and coached many years on the NFL level. Coach Stallings led Texas A&M to the 1967 Southwest Conference Championship and defeated Alabama and Coach Bryant in the 1968 Cotton Bowl. Stallings would lead Alabama to the 1992 National Championship.
Brantly, a punter from Sealy, Texas, ended his Aggie football career with an average of 44.3 and became the only punter in Aggie history to average at least 43 yards per kick for four straight years. A four-year letterman, Brantly was named second-team All-America by Rivals.com and ended the 2008 season as the #3-ranked punter in the country with an average of 45.7 per kick. He will wear #16 in the game.
Gorrer, a defensive back from Port Arthur, Texas, was a four-year letterman and recorded a total of 136 tackles during his career and broke up 14 passes. This past season he recorded two quarterback sacks for losses of 23 yards. He will wear #4 in the game.
Obiozor, a defensive lineman from Pearland, Texas, was a four-year letterman. Obiozor recorded 134 total tackles in his career to go with 18.5 tackles behind the line of scrimmage which included 7.5 quarterback sacks. He will wear #49 in the game.
The Nation squad won the inaugural event in 2007, 24-20. Aggies Chad Schroeder and Jason Jack competed for Texas.
In 2008, led by Coach Stallings, the Texas squad delivered a 41-14 victory with Aggies Chris Alexander, Marquis Carpenter and Henry Smith competing for Texas.
The 2009 game will kick at 2 p.m. central and will be televised by CBS College Sports.
