College Station - This weekend's Texas A&M Showdown, with the Big 12 challenging the SEC in track and field, will feature several nationally ranked programs on the Aggie campus as they compete in the Gilliam Indoor Track and Field Stadium.
Rankings released by United States Track & Field Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) this week had the Texas A&M women maintaining its status as the No. 1 team in the country following the first three weeks of action in the 2009 indoor season. Meanwhile, the Aggie men moved up to No. 5 in the first ranking of the season after being ranked sixth in the preseason poll.
During the meet this weekend, with the finals beginning at 4 p.m. on Saturday and concluding with the 4 x 400 relays at 7:15 p.m., the Aggies will team with rival Texas and Missouri to form the Big 12 contingent. They will combine to score points against a SEC trio of schools that include Florida, LSU and Mississippi.
Scoring by conference will have a point breakdown of 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 for the top eight places in each event. The only scoring limitation is allowing only one relay per school to score.
Florida is the highest rated men's team at No. 3 in this week's USTFCCCA poll followed by No. 9 Texas, No. 10 LSU and No. 23 Missouri. Behind the Aggies on the women's side are No. 4 LSU, No. 6 Texas, and No. 15 Florida.
