Texas A&M's Eric Sehn repeated as Big 12 Swimmer and Diver of the Week after each logging a pair of victories against No. 20 SMU last weekend, the conference office announced on Wednesday. It was the second career award for Makany, and a record 12th Diver of the Week award for Sehn.
Against SMU, Makany swept the 100- and 200-yard freestyles for the third straight dual meet, all of which were against top 20-ranked teams. The sophomore from Budapest, Hungary is 7-1 in duals on the season in both freestyle events with six straight wins. Against SMU, Makany broke the school record in the 200 freestyle with an NCAA "B" cut time of 1:36.21. His second first place finish came when he beat SMU All-American Luka Vrtovec in the 100 freestyle with a "B" cut time of 43.73.
"It's a great honor for a guy that works hard every day and keeps getting better," Aggie head swimming coach Jay Holmes said. "He's here for two things - to become a great swimmer and get an education, and he's very committed to both. He walks the talk. He's not afraid anything, and he tends to meet things head on."
Sehn, a senior from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, led the Aggie divers to a 1-2-3 finish against the Mustangs. His 3-meter score of 422.18 was his fourth 400-plus score of the season, including his third 420-plus score effort. The senior's 1-meter score of 391.65 was also the second highest of his career as he set the record of 405.15 points against SMU in 2007. It was Sehn's fourth 350-point plus 1-meter effort of 2008-09.
"Eric has done so many tremendous things for the Texas A&M program," Holmes said. "He's won conference championships and he consistently posts wins in dual meets. (Diving coach) Kevin (Wright) does a terrific job of getting his divers prepared. If we turn the lights on, we know Eric Sehn is going to be ready to compete."
The Aggie swimmers and divers are back in action at 6 p.m. on Friday when they take on the Texas Longhorns in the State Farm Lone Star Showdown in Austin.
