College Station - Rankings from the track and field coaches association this week kept the Texas A&M women in the No. 1 position they've held for the entire indoor season while the Aggie men remain No. 4 for a second consecutive week.
This marks the sixth week, including the preseason rankings in early January, in which the women have been ranked No. 1 in the country by United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
The A&M women head into next weekend's Big 12 Championships as defending champions from the 2007 and 2008 seasons. Including outdoor conference meets the A&M women have claimed the past four Big 12 titles.
Following Texas A&M in the women's top 10 are: 2. Oregon; 3. Tennessee; 4. Michigan; 5. Penn State; 6. Florida State; 7. Arizona State; 8. Virginia Tech; 9. LSU; and 10. Arizona.
The Aggie men are No. 4 for the second consecutive week and top the other 11 conference schools. Oregon moved into the No. 1 position ahead of previously top-ranked Arkansas. Florida State is No. 3 with A&M at No. 4 followed by No. 5 Nebraska. Rounding out the top 10 include: 6. LSU; 7. Florida; 8. Texas; 9. Oklahoma and 10. Texas Tech.
Last season the Texas A&M men finished fourth during the Big 12 Indoor Championships and then posted a runner-up finish during the Big 12 Outdoor meet.
Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium will be the site of the 2009 Big 12 Championships on February 27-28 as Texas A&M serves as the host of the conference indoor meet for the first time in school history. Nine of the Big 12 men's programs are ranked among the top 25 this week along with six women's teams.
Tickets for the Big 12 Indoor Championships are available through the Aggie Ticket Office at 888-99-AGGIE or via the website at www.aggieathletics.com.
