MOSCOW, Russia - Texas A&M freshman diver Janie Potvin (Brossard, Quebec) qualified for the semi-finals in platform diving at the 2009 FINA Diving Grand Prix on Thursday.
Potvin, who is sitting out her true freshman season due to NCAA regulations, turned in a score of more than 290 points during preliminaries which not only earned her a spot in the semifinal but also allowed her to be eligible to qualify for a host of other international competitions this year.
"The work she has been putting in on a daily basis is beginning to show," A&M diving coach Kevin Wright said. "It always doesn't show up when you want it to but, if you're patient, it eventually will. This trip to Russia is a step along the way of her realizing that her hard work is paying off. I think she can be a top diver in the world. This kind of experience helps affirm that what we're doing is on track."
Potvin earned a total of 275.50 in her semi-final bracket, placing her fifth in her group. Her semifinal score ranked eighth among the 12 total semifinalists.
