RANCHO SANTA FE, Calif. - No. 5-ranked Stanford closed out a pair of matches on the final hole to edge No. 20 Texas A&M, 3 and 2, on Monday at the Callaway Collegiate Match Play Championship at The Farms Golf Club.
The Aggies play No. 13 Texas Tech in Tuesday's final match. Live scoring is available at www.golfstat.com.
Senior Matt Van Zandt and sophomore Conrad Shindler were each one down going into the last hole, but both missed birdie putts to hand Stanford a pair of 2 up victories. Van Zandt lost to Daniel Lim and Shindler fell to Dodge Kemmer.
A&M senior Bronson Burgoon routed Stanford's Steve Ziegler, 7 and 6, after winning eight of the first 10 holes. The Aggies also got a win from junior Andrea Pavan, who had a 1 up victory against David Chung. A&M's John Hurley dropped a 4 and 3 decision to Sihwan Kim.
The Aggies lost to defending national champion UCLA, 4-0-1, in Mondays opening round. The Bruins' Conner Driscoll bridied the final hole to half his match with Van Zandt. In the other matches, Gregor Main edged Burgoon (2 and 1), Erik Flores beat Pavan (5 and 3), Philip Francis defeated Shindler (4 and 3) and Beau Schoolcraft downed Hurley (4 and 2).
"We played two great teams today and came up a little bit short in the afternoon match," A&M Coach J.T. Higgins said. "UCLA showed why they are the defending national champions. They took it to us early and we couldn't come back. Not to take anything away from them, but we didn't play very well. We played a lot better against Stanford, winning two matches and taking two others to the final hole. This team has so much potential and we learned a lot about the things we need to work on."
