COLUMBIA, Mo. - The No. 19 Texas A&M softball team was plagued by home runs from No. 11 Missouri as the Tigers (33-5, 6-2 Big 12) overpowered the Aggies (23-14, 1-4 Big 12), 8-0 and 9-1 in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at University Field.
Mizzou hit five home runs on the day to account for 12 of their 17 runs. A&M tallied five hits, three of which were doubles. Collecting hits were senior Erin Glasco, sophomores Alex Reynolds (2B).
The Aggies plated their lone run in the top of the fifth inning of the second game. Villarreal led off with a double past Rhea Taylor in center fielder. She was moved to third on a groundout on the right side by sophomore Rhi Kliesing before Glasco hit an RBI groundout to the shortstop.
The A&M pitching staff struggled in the circle giving up 10 walks and hitting two batters in 10 innings. The Tigers struck out 10 and walked two.
In the first game, Missouri led off the bottom of the second with back-to-back walks before Lindsey Ubrun lined a double to left center to put the Tigers on the scoreboard first. An Aggie error loaded the bases and Julie Silver's two-out, two-run single down the left field line got Mizzou out to a 3-0 lead.
Rau led off the top of the third with a double down the left field line and was sacrificed to third by freshman Kelsea Orsak, but a shallow pop fly and a strikeout left Rau at third and the Aggies scoreless.
Megan Christopher hit a three-run bomb in the third to increase the Mizzou lead to 6-0.
Glasco singled up the middle with one out in the fourth, but again the Tiger defense held strong and recorded the last two outs of the inning leaving Glasco stranded.
In the fifth, Ubrun ended the game at 8-0 with a two-run, walk-off homer to right center.
Stacy Delaney (8-2) gave up two hits, walked none and struck out six in the circle for the win. Kliesing (14-9) was saddled with the loss after giving up three runs (one earned) on two hits while walking three for the loss.
In the bottom of the first in game two, Mizzou quickly racked up three runs off of an RBI single by Silver and a two-run shot to right from Micaela Minner.
Marla Schweisberger's grand slam in the second increased the Tigers' lead to 7-0.
Christopher led off the bottom of the third with her second homer of the day - a solo long ball to right center.
The Aggies took one run back in the top of the fifth after Glasco scored Villarreal on an RBI groundout.
Kristin Nottelman (9-1) picked up the win after throwing three innings and giving up one run on two hits, walking one and fanning two. Senior Savana Lloyd (0-1) started game two and gave up three runs on three hits for the loss.
A&M returns to the Aggie Softball Complex for the first of a four-game home stand against Oklahoma State on Wednesday. First pitch of the doubleheader begins at 5 p.m.
